Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship for Japanese Studies & Teacher Training (Deadline: 14 February 2020)

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers the following scholarships to foreign students to study in Japan.

Japanese Studies Scholarship: To deepen understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japanese culture for a period of one year at designated Japanese universities.

Teacher Training Scholarship: To conduct research for a period of 1 ½ years on school education at Japanese universities.

Eligibility:

Open to Malaysians and other foreign nationals whose countries have a diplomatic relation with Japan.

Japanese Studies:

Aged 18-29 as of 1 Apr. 2020 ( born between April 2, 1990 and April 1, 2002 ); current 2nd or 3rd year undergraduates majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture in universities outside Japan; proficient in Japanese language; and of good health.

Teacher Training:

Aged 35 and below as of 1 Apr. 2020 ( born on or after April 2, 1985 ); university or teacher training college graduates who have worked as teachers at primary/secondary schools or as academic staff at teacher training colleges (excluding universities) in their home countries for 5 years; proficient in English language and keen to learn Japanese language; and of good health.

Value of Award:

For Japanese Studies, an allowance of 117,000 yen per month. For Teacher Training, an allowance of 143,000 yen per month. Fees for entrance exam, matriculation and tuition at universities and a round trip air- ticket are also provided.

Conditions:

Candidates are required to return to their home country immediately upon graduation. While studying in Japan, they are required to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the home country by participating in activities at schools and communities. After graduation, they are required to maintain close relations with the Japanese university attended and cooperate in the conduct of surveys and questionnaires and all relevant projects and events conducted by Japanese diplomatic missions in their home country. Teacher Training candidates are expected to utilize the results of their research on school education in Japan in their teaching careers.

Other foreign nationalities have to contact the respective embassies of Japan in their home countries. Shortlisted candidates will be notified to attend an interview.
