According to the ICT Industry Outlook 2015/16 published by PIKOM and JobStreet.com, there have been interesting structural changes within the ICT services segment. The contribution of telecommunication services dipped from 65.2% in 2010 to 61.4% in 2014 and dropped further to 58.4 in 2015. Meanwhile, there was an expansion in the areas of computer service, programming, broadcasting and publishing which have seen double digit growth in the past 5 years.
These are due to the move from traditional computers to smaller ICT devices and wearable gadgets; increasing real-time and interactive multi-media contents; rising popularity of cloud computing, big data analytics, software as a service (SaaS), social media applications, internet of things and wearable technology; as well as the integration of systems and processes and ICT services.
Within the Business Applications domain, professionals specializing in IT audit and IT security are in great demand to fend off malware makers and cyber thieves. Meanwhile, mobile architects who can create mobile rich content on Android, iPhone and Blackberry platforms will also be in high demand.
In addition, Big Data Analytics is also a fast growing area, especially by big companies desiring to extract insights form their petabytes of stored data. The best candidates for this job are those equipped with inter-disciplinary knowledge and experience in both technical know-how and a strong statistical/mathematical background.
Gaming is another fast-growing area with potential for jobs in cloud-based gaming, F2P (Free2Play), social media and subscription games and online gaming.
